Free MIDI Converter — Frequently Asked Questions

Everything about formats, quality, privacy and how Free MIDI Converter works.

General

Is the MIDI converter free?
Yes. All four tools are free and require no account or watermark.
Which MIDI extensions work?
Standard .mid and .midi files are accepted.
Does the site overwrite my original?
No. Every result is created as a separate downloadable file.

MIDI to MP3

Does a MIDI file contain recorded sound?
No. It contains performance instructions such as notes, timing, velocity and instrument programs. A synthesizer must render those instructions into audio.
Will it sound exactly like my keyboard?
Not necessarily. Keyboards and music software use different sound banks. This converter uses a consistent built-in renderer for a clean preview, not a copy of a particular device's sounds.
Are tempo changes preserved?
Yes. Tempo events in the MIDI file are applied during rendering.
Can I convert several MIDI files?
Yes. Batch results are packaged into one ZIP download.

MIDI to WAV

Can I edit the notes in the WAV?
No. WAV contains rendered audio. Use the original MIDI file to edit notes, instruments or timing.
Is WAV better quality than MP3?
WAV is uncompressed, so it avoids MP3 encoding loss and is the better working format for further editing.

Transpose MIDI

Does transposing change the tempo?
No. It changes note pitches only; timing and tempo are preserved.
Can I transpose by an octave?
Yes. Choose up or down 12 semitones.

Change MIDI Tempo

Does changing tempo alter pitch?
No. MIDI timing changes independently of the note numbers, so pitch is preserved.
Are multiple tempo changes preserved?
Yes. Every tempo event is scaled by the same percentage.
